I’m responding to the Chief Executive who seems to think that green groups only want nice parks and object to all types of development. This is simply wrong. What we do want is for Hong Kong to recognize that we have a unique city. And to make sure we build on our strength, and not losing them.
Hong Kong combines hyper-density with absolute wilderness. That density helps us keep travel cost down, gives us one of the highest trip rates for public transport, and allows us to get around quickly, having more meetings in a day than any other financial centres. With the wilderness nearby, everyone can enjoy blue water, white sand beaches, and incredible mountain ranges right in the city for the cost of a bus trip. You can’t find this in New York, Beijing, London and Shanghai.
To nurture this unique feature of our city requires three things. First, be careful when we change country park boundaries (謹慎處理更改郊野公園範圍問題), and only do so when there is no reasonable alternative. Second, we need to stop the destruction of natural habitats on private land in the New Territories (停止破壞新界私人土地). This requires minor but important changes in planning, land and environmental laws. And the Third, we need to encourage and invest in walking in Hong Kong by improving public transport, reducing reliance on private cars, and improving space for pedestrians (改善行人網絡及空間).
